Tubby

New Orleans R&B

Tubby is an NYC-based band dedicated to shining a light on the old school New Orleans R+B tunes featuring the music of Professor Longhair, Allen Toussaint, James Booker, Little Richard, and Fats Domino.

I've loved New Orleans, and it's rich heritage since I first visited the Big Easy in 1997. I was on a high school class trip to New Orleans and ended up sitting in everywhere i could. I was offered a summer job, which I took and played Dixieland music 10 hours a day, six days a week at The Gazebo, a restaurant, and bar next to the French Market. Older musicians in the band introduced me to such local musical luminaries as Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, and Ellis Marsalis.

New Orleans R&B

The heyday of early rhythm and blues can be traced back to a few amazingly talented and unique performers from New Orleans, Louisiana, starting in the 1940s to the early '60s.

The tenor saxophone was largely featured in this music, and the sax work of the great Lee Allen, Alvin "Red" Tyler, and Nat Perrilliat are just a few names of the many talented saxmen to come out of New Orleans during this time. I've always been drawn to the big sounds these tenor great have had and feel blessed to have immersed myself in there style.

Tubby was started in hopes to share the music of this beautiful generation.
